James Bay is home to a wonderful (and very accessible) eatery that fully deserves to be visited if you’re in the mood for delicious food, excellent service, and a barrier-free space to maneuver your mobility device.

Tucked away in a somewhat unassuming space at 435 Simcoe Street, the Heron Rock Bistro is open seven days a week and offers live music on Monday and Saturday nights, happy hour daily from 3 to 5 PM and 8PM to close, and is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy great food with friends - I strongly suggest you give it a try!

What I love about it:

Heron Rock Bistro serves up tasty and satisfying meals, including brunch seven days a week, in a well lit and attractive space adorned with local art. The serving staff are very attentive and conscientious, and the complimentary, freshly made-in-house bread is a lovely treat.

Accessibility:

Entry into the restaurant is at ground level and there is ample room to maneuver once inside.

There are tables and chairs, which are easily moveable to accommodate all manner of wheeled devices. There are also booths for folks who may prefer that sort of seating setup.

The bar, which is the focal point of the restaurant, is high-counter style with tall chairs so folks in wheelchairs wouldn’t be able to sit up to it; however, as mentioned above, the rest of the restaurant seating is very accessible.

There are at least two accessible parking stalls at the James Bay Thrifty’s next door.

Plus there are two large restrooms in the restaurant, one of which is particularly accessible.

Final verdict:

Definitely give the Heron Rock Bistro a try, I promise you won’t be disappointed. Brunch offerings are delicious so why not pop by on an upcoming weekend? It’s not a bad idea to make a reservation for your party, just to be sure.

Bonus:

If you like second hand goods for your home, there’s a wonderful consignment shop two doors over in the same development called “Super Chance”, which is worth a visit to see beautiful carpets, curated artwork, china, jewelry and decorative objets d’arts. Because of the nature of consignment shops, merchandise can move quickly so if you see something special, don’t hesitate and miss out, it happened to me!
